Changing SQL version from Enterprise to Standard
sql clusterring
Hi All,
Am very new to SQL Server Clusttering ?? I have less knowledge in this area nor i got any chance to work on it which involves
resources , resource groups , storage (SAN) etc....
If am a fresher / or a new comer to SQL Admin area what questions can be asked to test the knowlege on sql clusttering??
Is that mandatory to have hands on experience on what is sql clusttering and failover happens in sql clusttering??
Recently, i have attended some interviews and am able to answer to types and some concepts on clusttering. I don't exactly know what they
are expecting from the a Jr.DBA on this regard???
Can anyone share there thoughts on this ?
Thanks in Advance.
SQL Server 2014 on Windows 8.1 - Setup Failure - C:\Windows\Temp folder
Well, the title pretty much says it all. I'm installing SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition on Windows 8.1 Pro. The installation uses domain service accounts for all the services. The installation progress well until the end. Then, I get the following message:
Updating permission setting for folder C:\Windows\Temp failed. The folder permission setting were supposed to be set to (and an ACL list followed by what looked like a object sid).
I'm running setup as administrator.
I tried to manually set the permissions, but that's not working (access is denied). I also turned off user account control and hit retry. That failed to.
So, before I go in there and take ownership of everything on the C drive, and grant myself full control over every file on the computer, I thought I ask for what I'm "supposed" to do. I'm not going to tolerate this file control crap for very long. I have better things to do.
Purchasing SQL Server Developer Editon
I apologize if I chose incorrect forum, but couldn't find suitable one.
Here's my question. Can private customer (i.e. not organization) purchase Developer Edition of SQL Server? Thanks beforehand.
There is no knowledge that is not power.
Multiple SQL Server instances
Is it possible to have two SQL Server instances, one 2008 R2 and another 2012, to run on the same machine with both having filestream enabled?
I tried to setup this in local dev machine with express editions and I can get the services running. But when I try to read a filestream from the 2008 R2 instance, I get a ArgumentException
.
The path in both instance looks alright.
SQL Server 2008 R2
\\DEVMC\MSSQLSERVER\v1\TESTDB\dbo\coreFileStore\fileData\525F2031-8D8C-45FF-8386-E1DD5F11C960
SQL Server 2012
\\DEVMC\EXPRESS2012\v1\TESTDB12\dbo\coreFileStore\fileData\525F2031-8D8C-45FF-8386-E1DD5F11C960
Is there any magical setting which could make it work in both instances or is just simply not do-able?

User Account for SQL Services
Hello,
I created a local domain user account to assign for SQL services. But I'm still missing the steps to assign this user the required privileges. Windows SBS 2008
Can someone be kind enough to post a step by step procedure to assign the required permissions and privileges for a domain account to be used for the SQL Services?
Thank you in advance.

SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 3 constantly fails with Windows Update Code 84B30002
I have MS SQL 2008 R2 Developer, MS SQL 2014 Express, MS SQL 2014 Developer, Visual Studio 3013 Community & Visual Studio 3015 Community
I also installed MSDT & BI templates for Visual Studio 3013
Operation system Windows 8.1 x64 Pro
I have never installed MS SQL 2012 but I found out SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 3 as optional update. When I tried to install it I got a Code 84B30002.
When I opened list of installed products I found out following products
Microsoft SQL Server 2012
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Command Line Utilities
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier Up framework
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier Up framework (x64)
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express local DB

It is possibly that it was installed with Visual Studio 3013 Community
What I would have to install manually or not install at all (hide this update)?
P.S. I checked when this stuff has been installed - it happened partially when I installed VS 2013 community and some stuff came with MS SQL 2014 Developer
P.P.S. I tried to run this update manually and got following message:
"There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer"
Of course I have never installed MS SQL 2012 on my own. Moreover there were ~8 Gb download @ Windows Updates. At the same time there are x64 version - 1.0 Gb & x86 version - 732 Mb

By the way, uninstalling SP3 does return the system to the previous (SP2 CU9) working state. I have done it at least twice but I will leave my broken SP3 in place while I (hopefully) resolve this issue with your help.
What do I do next? In particular, what should I do with the stack dump?

sqlevn70.rll - Failed to Load Format String for Error 345
I have been receiving the following alerts from this error message as shown below:
Operating system error:317(The system cannot find message text for message number 0x345in the message filefor1033.).Check that sqlevn70.rll is installed in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\Resources\1033,where1033is
the language ID of US English,or the appropriate folder for the localeinuse. Also check memory usage.
The root directory of this MSSQL instance is at E:\drive, which I think might be the why it is causing that error.
I have googled and seen what other people have suggested, and mostly is suggesting of uninstalling and re-installing the MSSQL. But this is a production instance, and I am trying to avoid this approach as this might cause a bigger impact to the business.
Hence, I have tried the following steps:
- Created the path "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\Resources\1033"
- Copy the sqlevn70.rll from the E:\drive
- Restarted the SQL service
However, it doesn't seems to help and I still received the same error message.
Could anyone advice me on how to resolve this error message?
Thank you!

Error:Affinity Mask specified is greater than the number of CPU's Supported
We have recently migrated one of our server to SQL2014 . We have a total of 16 processors in this server, but we are able to use only 4 processors. When tried to select more processors we are getting an error
Affinity Mask specified is greater than the number of CPU's Supported or licensed on this edition of sql server. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:5833)
Seems that only 4 processors are online the rest of them are offline.
Any ideas on how to bring the remaining processors online

I am getting the impression I need to reinstall SQL. The installer won't run and the Windows Uninstaller won't run, either.
Can't install SQL Express 2014 on a virtualized Win 8.1 vm
Context: Creating an installation package for a windows app that uses SQL Express. Using WIX. In general, the WIX setup files are working, just the SQL install failed so I fell back to running the .msi directly and that also fails.
I have the same error as in this forum post: How do I install SQL Express 2014 LocalDB on Windows 8.1? The answers on that post have not led me to the issue and I haven't really made any headway on other forums. The error message is:
"Installation of this product failed because it is not supported on this operating system. For information on supported configurations, see the product documentation."
The installation target is a Hyper-V guest machine as follows: 2G RAM, 14.5 GB free on the C: drive, 2.5 GHz CPU. I turned .NET 3.5 on.
I used a .msi file from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42299 and selected "LocalDB 32BIT\SqlLocalDB.msi".
I have a hard time believing it's not supported on a VM since that is such a logical place to test applications using SQL express.
One of my problems is not even seeing a log file. The location in Program files doesn't exist and I don't know where else to look.
Update after initial post: So this link suggests SQL Express 2014 won't work in virtualized machines other than on servers, but I'm assuming that limitation is for the Hyper-V host, not the guests. Also, at the Microsoft link above I downloaded this install file, Express 32BIT\SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe, and that worked just fine, including from within the WIX install package as part of the install chain/bundle. so clearly SQL Express works just fine. But that's not what we would want to use for an end user is it? Don't we just want the light-weight LocalDB package? So I think I've isolated my real question as stated above, why doesn't the simple SQL 2014 Express LocalDB .msi file install?
And with regard to virtualization, isn't testing apps on VM's the desired and acceptable practice?
